Hotels by the Arena in Amsterdam-Zuidoost, for a first visit built around an event
Many visitors come to Amsterdam for one night of football or music and stay beside the venue rather than in the centre. The hotels around the Arena in Zuidoost are built for exactly that, and they are reached from the airport without going near the canals.
Amsterdam-Zuidoost lies south-east of the centre, beyond the river and the ring road, and visitors usually know it for the football stadium with a sliding roof that opened in the nineteen-nineties. Beside the stadium stand a large indoor concert arena and a music hall, and the wide boulevard between them is lined with shops, a cinema and offices. Hotels gather around the station and along the boulevard, most of them large and modern, with a few more beside the office towers to the south.
From the airport without a change
Trains from the airport heading for Utrecht call at Bijlmer ArenA, the station between the stadium and the boulevard, so the journey needs no change at Centraal. From the platform most hotels are a short walk along wide, level pavements, which is kind to a suitcase. A taxi follows the ring road and the motorway south of the city, a quick route outside the rush hours. Write from the train with the hotel and the time you expect to be in the room.
Rooms built for crowds
The hotels here are mostly business and event hotels: tall buildings with big lobbies, banks of lifts, key cards and rooms that are larger and newer than in the old centre. On a night with a match or a concert they fill completely, and the lobbies are busy before and after the show. On such nights one more visitor walking through to the lifts is nothing anyone would notice.
After the show
Event crowds leave all at once, and the station and the boulevard stay packed for a while after the last song or the final whistle. Write before you leave your seat, with the hotel and the room number, so the forty to sixty minutes run while the crowd thins and you walk back. If you would rather wait until the area has cleared, say so in the thread and ask for a later start; sessions run at any hour, and a calm room after a loud night is the whole point of booking one.
Booking ahead for an event night
A big event fills diaries as well as hotels. A guest who knows the date weeks in advance can arrange the session early, and any booking made more than a day ahead is confirmed with half the fee as a deposit, as is every first booking. The deposit entry explains how that half is handled if plans change, and four-hand massage suits the large rooms here if two therapists appeal.
