Hotels around the Albert Cuyp market in De Pijp
The Albert Cuyp market fills one long street of De Pijp with stalls six days a week. The hotels around it are boutique conversions and small guest houses, and staying among them means waking to the sound of the market setting up.
De Pijp was built in the late nineteenth century as a working district outside the old city, with long, narrow streets of tall apartment buildings. Its name, the pipe, is said to come from those long, straight streets. Today it is a lively neighbourhood of cafés, restaurants and small shops, with the Albert Cuyp market at its centre and the Sarphatipark just to the south.
What the hotels are like
Hotels around the market are mostly boutique conversions of old apartment buildings, with individually designed rooms, good bathrooms and, almost always, stairs. Some are guest houses with a handful of rooms and no evening desk. Rooms on the market street are lively in the morning; those on the side streets are quieter.
From the airport
The north-south metro line has a station called De Pijp, a short walk from the market, and from Amsterdam Zuid it is a couple of stops north. A taxi from the airport can reach most streets, though they are narrow and parking is tight. Write from the train with the hotel's name and the time you expect to be ready.
The market and the evening
The stalls set up early and pack away in the late afternoon, leaving the street to cafés and restaurants. Evenings are lively but not loud, and after midnight the neighbourhood is quiet. A session in the evening fits easily, with the forty to sixty minutes counted from the moment the hour is agreed. Five of the therapists on the roster live in De Pijp itself.
Sarphatipark and a first walk
A few streets south of the market, the Sarphatipark is a small landscaped park with a pond, a fountain and paths that loop around its lawns. It makes a gentle first walk after the flight: once around the park, a coffee on its edge, and back to the room. Write as you set off, mention that this is your first booking, and the reply will name who is free and suggest a start. A session after the walk leaves the rest of the evening for a slow dinner on one of the side streets, or simply for sleep.
Steep stairs and small rooms
The apartment buildings of De Pijp have the narrow stairs typical of their period, often three or four flights to the top. Mention your floor in the thread. Rooms are well designed but not always large, and a slow format like erotic oil massage suits them. What first-time visitors ask before they book answers the common questions.
