Hotels on the Amstel, from the Munt to the Skinny Bridge
The river that gave the city its name runs through the centre between wide quays. The hotels along its banks are larger than most in the canal ring, with river views and space inside, and they suit a first visit that wants room to breathe.
The Amstel enters the old city from the south and flows north toward the Munt, where its old course continues as the Rokin. Along this stretch the quays are broad and the buildings substantial: the old circus theatre on the east bank, the white wooden drawbridge known as the Skinny Bridge, and rows of grand houses, offices and hotels on both sides. Tour boats and small private launches pass under the bridges all day.
The hotels on the river
Hotels along the Amstel range from large establishments in nineteenth-century buildings to newer ones behind older facades, and most have lifts, staffed desks and rooms of a good size. Rooms facing the river look onto water and light; those at the back look onto courtyards or the canal ring. Either way, the buildings are solid enough that a session in the room stays private and undisturbed. Some riverside hotels still have a landing stage of their own, a reminder of the days when guests arrived by boat, and a few keep a terrace on the water for breakfast. Ask at check-in which floors look over the river; the higher rooms see a long way along it.
From the airport
From Centraal the metro reaches Waterlooplein, right by the river, in two stops, or a tram runs south along the eastern side of the old centre. A taxi from the airport can reach most riverside hotels directly, since the quays on this stretch take traffic. With luggage, that is often the simpler way in.
An evening along the water
The river is lovely at dusk, when the bridges are outlined in small lights and the water doubles them. A walk from the Munt to the Skinny Bridge and back takes little time and makes a calm first evening for anyone still adjusting to the clock. Write for a session as you turn back toward the hotel, and she will be at the door forty to sixty minutes after you confirm.
Space for two therapists
The larger rooms in the riverside hotels suit formats that need space, including sessions with two therapists. Four-hand massage asks for room on both sides of the bed, and many river rooms have it. The deposit page explains why a booking with two therapists is confirmed with half the fee ahead, whether or not it is your first.
