Hotels between the Rokin and the Spui, on the quiet side of the shopping streets
South of Dam Square the city settles into shopping lanes, bookshops and a hidden courtyard. The hotels between the Rokin and the Spui suit a first visit well, and the way in from the metro is short.
The Rokin was once the last open stretch of the Amstel inside the old city. It was filled in long ago and is now a broad street with a metro station beneath it, one stop from Centraal on the line that runs north to south under the centre. Parallel to it runs the Kalverstraat, the main shopping lane, and at their southern end both open onto the Spui, a small square of bookshops and cafés with the gate to the Begijnhof courtyard tucked into one corner.
The hotels here
This cluster mixes newer hotels in converted office and bank buildings along the Rokin with smaller canal-side places on the Singel and the lanes off the Spui. The conversions tend to have generous rooms and new bathrooms behind heavy old fronts. The canal-side rooms are smaller and older, with the stairs that come with any house of that age, but they look onto water rather than traffic.
An area that goes quiet after the shops close
By day the shopping lanes are packed shoulder to shoulder. In the evening the shutters come down, the crowds drain away towards the nightlife squares, and the lanes become surprisingly still. For a session in the room, that evening hush is the main attraction. Book for a time after closing and the street below your window will have very little to say.
From the airport, by train and metro
The quick way in is the airport train to Centraal and one stop south on the metro to Rokin, which surfaces in the middle of the cluster. Lifts run from the platform to the street, which helps with luggage, and the exits are signed by street name, so check which side your hotel stands on before you ride up. Write while you are still on the train, and the reply will usually arrive before you go underground again. The first-visit page lists what that opening message should hold.
Small rooms and the right format
Canal-side rooms off the Spui are often compact, with the bed pushed against a wall. Slow oil work needs little more than a bed and a warm room, which is why erotic oil massage sits naturally in a small room. Mention the size in the thread and she will plan around it before she sets out.
