Hotels in the Spiegel quarter, between the canal ring and the Rijksmuseum
One street of antique dealers and galleries runs from the Herengracht toward the Rijksmuseum, and the canal houses around it form a small cluster of hotels. It is a quiet, well-kept corner between the old centre and the museum quarter.
The Nieuwe Spiegelstraat and its continuation, the Spiegelgracht, lead south from the canal ring toward the arched passage that runs through the Rijksmuseum. The shop windows show old maps, porcelain, clocks, paintings and silver, and some of the dealers have traded here for generations. Around this spine the Herengracht, the Keizersgracht and the Prinsengracht hold canal houses, some of them now small hotels, and the side streets have a few more.
What the hotels are like
Hotels here tend to be small and carefully kept, with rooms that suit the neighbourhood: old furniture, framed prints, a view across a canal. Some have lifts fitted inside the old houses; others rely on a staircase that turns tightly at every landing, with breakfast served in a garden room at the back. A desk may close in the evening, leaving a code or a key for the street door. Both details belong in the thread before she sets out.
From the airport
The express bus from the airport stops not far away, and from Centraal trams run along the Vijzelstraat and the Leidsestraat on either side of the quarter. A taxi to the door is easy enough, as long as the driver can find a place to pull in on the canal. Many guests walk the last part, which takes them past the shop windows on the way in.
Calm evenings
The dealers close in the late afternoon, and the quarter goes quiet. A few restaurants on the side streets stay open, and the noise of Leidseplein, a short walk west, does not reach this far. The shop windows stay lit after closing, so the walk back at night passes a street of lamps and gilded frames. For an evening in the room, few corners of the centre are as peaceful. Write once dinner is over, and she will be with you forty to sixty minutes after the hour is agreed.
Museum day, then the room
A first day in the Rijksmuseum leaves the legs tired and the mind full of paintings. The walk back to a hotel in the Spiegel quarter takes no time at all, and a session in the room is a restful way to finish. A museum day, then a session describes that kind of day, and nuru massage, with its warm gel and long, gliding contact, suits a room with a decent shower.
