Hotels along the Vondelpark, in the townhouses by the park gates
The Vondelpark is the long green space at the edge of the centre, and a string of hotels sits along its northern side and around its main gate. Waking up to trees outside the window is the draw, and the quiet nights suit a session in the room.
Laid out in the nineteenth century in the manner of a landscape garden, the park stretches west from the edge of the museum quarter, with lawns, ponds, winding paths and an open-air theatre that stages performances in summer. Along its northern side, the Vondelstraat and the streets off the Overtoom hold rows of grand townhouses, some of them now hotels. Others stand near the main gate on the Stadhouderskade, a short walk from Leidseplein.
What the hotels are like
Hotels here are typically in nineteenth-century townhouses or villas, often with several houses joined together inside. Rooms facing the park have tall windows over the trees; rooms at the back look onto gardens. Lifts are common in the larger ones, stairs in the smaller. The buildings are quiet and the neighbourhood residential, which makes the whole cluster comfortable for an evening session.
From the airport
The express bus from the airport stops near Leidseplein and the Museumplein, both a short walk from the eastern end of the park. From Centraal a tram reaches the Overtoom or the Vondelstraat, and a taxi from the airport can drop you at the door on most of the surrounding streets. Write from the bus or the taxi, once you know roughly when you will reach the room.
Mornings and evenings in the park
The park belongs to runners and cyclists early in the morning and to picnics and families in the afternoon. In the evening it empties gradually, and by night the streets along it are as calm as any in the centre. A stroll under the trees after checking in, then a session in the room, makes a restful first evening, with her knock coming forty to sixty minutes after the hour is confirmed.
Front doors behind the trees
Several of the hotels on the park side occupy villas set back from the pavement behind small front gardens, so the way in is a gate, a short path and then the door. After dark the gate is sometimes latched and the garden unlit, which can make a building look closed when it is not. Tell the thread whether she should open the gate herself or wait at the pavement, and ask the desk to leave the path lit if the garden is dark. A guest in one of the larger hotels by the main gate has none of this to think about, since the lobby faces the street and stays lit all night.
A format for a quiet room
The calm here suits a format that takes its time. Body-to-body massage moves slowly, with warm oil and long contact, and a still room by the park lets it unfold without interruption. Rain, wind and a warm room has thoughts on the weather that sometimes greets a first arrival, and on why a warm room is the right answer to it.
